Patient A

We have known this forty-one year old man with a complex medical history since 1997. His third and fourth admissions to Wytham Hall were during this year.

Following earlier admissions for alcohol dependence and supervision of anti-tuberculosis therapy he went to Lanhill Road. He eventually left there but returned to Wytham Hall following an admission to Hospital, where the latest complication of his drinking was pancreatitis. This was treated with partial pancreatectomy and splenectomy. In addition to these conditions he also had high blood pressure, chronic airways disease, and hepatitis C. During the first admission this year he convalesced from his recent surgery and managed to stay off drink. When he was well enough he moved to Lanhill Road. He remained quite resistant to the idea of attending a rehabilitation course for his alcohol dependence. Eventually, however, he agreed to that and following a drinking relapse was admitted to Wytham Hall to prepare himself to go onto rehabilitation, which he successfully managed to do.
